Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is one of the safest and most effective methods of permanently removing fat cells. At East End Plastic Surgery & Laser Center in Suffolk County, NY, board-certified Long Island plastic surgeon, Dr. Judy Emanuele, can help you lose the stubborn areas of fat on the body that are resistant to diet and exercise with this procedure. Tumescent liposuction is performed to reduce fat from the neck, jowls, arms, “bra fat,” flanks, abdomen, hips, “muffin top”/ “spare tire,” inner and outer thighs and the buttocks. With liposuction, you can finally achieve the lean, more youthful body you deserve.

In the tumescent liposuction technique, large volumes of diluted local anesthetic are used to “inflate” the fat. The fat is then suction aspirated through a small cannula inserted through small incisions in the skin. In addition, a small amount of epinephrine is injected along with the local anesthetic to temporarily shrink the blood vessels. As a result, there is significantly less blood loss with tumescent liposuction as compared to traditional liposuction.

Dr. Emanuele has performed many successful liposuction procedures and looks forward to helping all interested patients learn more about how liposuction can uncover a trim, slim silhouette and a greater, overall satisfaction with their appearance.

Commonly Asked Questions - Liposuction:

What is tumescent liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction, sometimes called tumescent liposculpting, is one of the safest and most effective methods of liposuction. In the tumescent liposuction technique, large volumes of diluted local anesthetic are used to “inflate” the fat. The fat is then suction aspirated through a small cannula inserted through small incisions in the skin. After a tumescent liposuction procedure the patient is left with a much thinner layer of fat. The use of local anesthesia (vs. general anesthesia), minimal blood loss and minimal down time are a few of the advantages tumescent liposuction has over traditional liposuction.

What are the advantages of tumescent liposuction with Dr. Emanuele?

Some of the many advantages of tumescent liposuction include:

  • Uses only local anesthesia vs. general anesthesia
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Less blood loss as compared to traditional liposuction resulting in less post operative swelling and a quicker recovery time.
  • Smaller cannula reduces bruising and swelling after surgery
  • Minimally invasive, requiring only a few tiny incisions
  • Results are smoother and more even without the lumpiness and uneven ridging that is common in other liposuction treatments

Who are the best candidates for tumescent liposuction?

The best candidates for tumescent liposuction have elastic skin and are in good health. They have previously tried to eliminate bulges through exercise and proper diet. The best candidates have realistic expectations about their own bodies and understand that tumescent liposuction is not a replacement for weight loss.

How long is the recovery time?

Recovery time varies depending upon the number and types of areas treated. Most patients return to normal activities within two to three days.

Does tumescent liposuction hurt?

During the procedure patients report no pain. For up to a few days following the surgery patients may feel as if they have been vigorously exercising.

What results can I expect?

Results are dependent on the amount of fatty tissue removed and the specific area treated. You will continue to see improvement for three to six months after surgery.

Is the fat permanently removed?

When fat cells are removed from a treated area they do not return. However, weight gain will cause the remaining fat cells to expand. Tumescent liposuction is the only way to remove excess fatty tissue in specific areas of your body. However, it does not influence long-term body weight.

What are the costs associated with liposuction?

The cost of liposuction, as well as any procedure or treatment at East End Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, varies by patient because each patient’s treatment plan is unique, customized for his or her specific cosmetic concerns and objectives.
