Commonly Asked Questions About Abdominoplasty
  • Who are the best candidates for a Tummy Tuck?

The best candidates for a tummy tuck are non-smoking men or women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that will not respond to diet or exercise and possess realistic expectations. The surgery is ideal for women who, through multiple pregnancies, have severely stretched their abdominal muscles and skin. The loss of skin elasticity in older patients or those who have experienced significant weight loss can also be improved. Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight or women who plan on future pregnancies should postpone surgery accordingly.

  • How can I determine if a tummy tuck is right for me?

In your initial, complimentary consultation, Dr. Emanuele will evaluate your health, determine where your abdominal fat deposits lie and assess your skin tone. Alternative body-contouring methods or less complex procedures that may be more appropriate, such as liposuction or a partial abdominoplasty, will also be reviewed. Dr. Emanuele will also discuss the procedure in detail, and carefully explain all the risks, limitations, preparation and after-care associated with a tummy tuck. She will explain the type of anesthesia that will be used during the procedure and the total costs involved.

  • How is a tummy tuck performed?

The operation is performed by making an incision in the lower abdomen just above the pubis. The incision may go from hip to hip but is placed under the bikini line so that it is well hidden. The skin and fat is removed from the abdominal muscles all the way up to the bottom of the rib cage. All of the fat below the belly button is typically removed. The skin above the belly button is drawn down to the pubis and secured into position.

  • What are the risks associated with a tummy tuck?

All surgery carries a small level of risk. Abdominoplasty, under normal circumstances, is very safe. Patients are carefully selected and the facility is professionally staffed and properly equipped.

*Possible complications will be reviewed during your initial consultation.

  • How much pain can a patient expect post-operatively?

The amount of pain associated with a tummy tuck can vary. Some patients note a small to moderate amount of discomfort, while others report it to be more than that. Certainly, there is some discomfort. Patients will often experience some back discomfort due to the 45-degree positioning for 4 to 5 days after surgery.
